Cuba Continues to Suffer from Power Outages

The emotional and physical strain on the Cuban population under the U.S. embargo is constantly increasing.

On Tuesday, another nationwide power outage occurred in Cuba. Large swaths of the country were without power for 20 hours due to a failure at a state-owned power utility. This marks the third grid failure in two weeks.

The emotional and physical strain on the Cuban population under the U.S. embargo is constantly increasing. While power outages occur almost daily in Havana, there is often no running water, oil and food prices continue to rise, and food spoils.

To counteract the economic crisis caused by the embargo, the Cuban government has passed Decree 153, which is intended to make it easier for foreign companies to participate in the economy. Foreign investors are to gain access to Cuba through reduced bureaucracy, land use, and the direct hiring of workers. Government officials say the goal is not to sell off the country but to respond to the humanitarian crisis.
